Eric Hendy Coote was born on 1912 (Willesden Q1-1912 3A:512) the son of Frederick Hendy Henry and Martha G. COOTE (née HOFMEISTER).
They were at one time living at the White Horse pub, opposite the Gardiner Memorial Hall.

His parents both died before the 1939 registrations, father 5/9/1934 while living at White Horse, and mother 18/1/1939 while living at Vine Cottage, Burwell


HMS "Nigeria" was a Crown Colony class light cruiser, pennant number 60, launched in 1940, she survived the war to be broken up some time after 1975.

On 12 August 1942 H.M.S. "Nigeria" was participating in Operation Pedestal, escorting a convoy bound for Malta. She was the flagship of the close escort group. Nigeria was torpedoed and damaged by the Italian submarine 'Axum' but managed to make it back to Gibraltar escorted by three destroyers. She was sent from there to the United States for repairs, which took nine months to complete.
50 of her crew were lost.
